Self-reflective Learning

  • From this practicum experience I have learned...

how to respond to different situations that can occur and how to respond to certain clients. I have been able to improve my skills and increase my ability to be able to counsel. It has made me more sure about wanting to do this job. There are many things that I have learned from this practicum experience.

  • This gave me the opportunity to...

gain experience in a potential career option for me. I found that, by doing this practicum, this is a job that I really want to go into and be able to succeed in.

  •  What surprised me most was...

how I responded in some sessions when observing. When asked to join in and ask questions, I was able to respond with very good questions and get clients to open up and/or add on to what they were saying. I was able to build good rapport quickly with clients and have them feel comfortable in sessions

  •  My greatest learning came from...

this one session I had observed and interacted in. I had a big realization in myself and that made me have more confidence in my own abilities and want to continue with this career.

  •  If I did this again, I would...

spend as much time observing sessions, and asking more questions. I think at first I more was just observing and focusing on watching the client and counsellor. I would have more faith and confidence in myself when asking questions and having ideas about what to do.

  • The skills I will value the most post-university are...

communication, collaboration, active listening, and listening skills. I think these skills are very important with counselling and are highly valued in  sessions and how these skilled can be worked on and improved over time.
