Skills and Abilities

Skills I have learned/improved on from my practicum

I have worked on and improved many skills during this practicum. Some skills that I have worked on:

  • Communication

  • Collaboration

  • Listening

  • Adaptability

  • Organization and Planning

This practicum has helped me work on and improve upon many skills. I have worked on my communication through discussions with other counsellors and supervisors regarding different sessions and being able to communicate with youth/clients. For collaboration, and organization and planning, I had to work with others to organize and run the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Group. We had to work together to come up with different topics, information, worksheets, and activities for the group.  For adaptability, when in sessions, you sometimes just have to go with it and think of things as it is expressed by the client. You have to think on your feet a bit to decide on where to go with what information was presented. With listening, when working with clients listening is one of the most important skills to have. Active listening is a great skill to have and I was able to use listening skills in sessions with youth/clients.

Abilities I have learned/improved on from my practicum

I have many abilities that have been applied and improved over my time in the practicum.

  • ability to show active listening

  • ability to ask questions

  • ability to act on the spot

  • ability to communicate

  • ability to make connections/build rapport

Many of the abilities that I have improved on has been done in sessions. I have been able to work on my active listening skills and have been able to express them more clearly and efficiently when in sessions. I have more confidence in my ability to ask deeper questions to gain a better understanding of the client and what it going on. Acting on the spot is something that I have gained a bit more experience on. You never know what is going to happen in sessions. Many times you just have to go with it and act on and come up with questions and suggestions based on the information that was given to you. I have also managed to strengthen my ability to make and build connections and rapport with youth/clients. I have been able to get them to open up and make them feel more comfortable in sessions.
